Skiing in Cardrona, South Island New Zealand - August 2011

There is a bit of skiing in the north island but since this was our first time skiing in New Zealand we popped down to the south island to Wanaka and then on to Cardrona. Actually our plane broke down and we therefore flew to Queenstown and then took the highest road in New Zealand over the tops back to Cardrona. Cardrona is not as big as a European field and you have to drive off road for 18km up a mountain to get there but it served our needs very well and we will be nipping back.

Snow in Wellington New Zealand !?! - August 2011

Even though Wellington might be world famous for the wind (the rain and the Phoenix) it certainly is not famous for snow. The temperature normally boggles about all year round from between 8% and 18% and even these are extremes. In 3 years we have certainly never seen frost or snow. Apparently this weather freak is a single front stretching from the Antarctic straight up to Wellington. Makes you feel at home and all Christmasy don't it. Not sure all the tender native plants will feel too happy though.
